What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a certified, evidence-based training course designed to teach regular individuals how to recognize and respond to someone experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a substance use challenge. Just as traditional First Aid and CPR prepare you to assist someone experiencing a physical medical emergency, MHFA equips you with a concrete, 5-step action plan to offer initial support, de-escalate a crisis, and safely connect individuals to professional, peer, or self-help resources.

Who is this training for?

The simple answer is: Everyone. Mental Health First Aid is designed for everyday citizens and requires absolutely no prior medical or clinical background. Mental health challenges can impact anyone, anywhere, which makes this training invaluable for:

  • Workplaces & Businesses: From HR professionals and corporate executives to frontline employees looking to foster a supportive, healthy team culture.

  • Schools & Higher Education: Teachers, professors, coaches, and university staff who want to support students navigating academic anxiety, depression, or stress.

  • Community & Faith-Based Organizations: Volunteers, nonprofit staff, and faith leaders who act as trusted, frontline resources for their communities.

  • Public Safety & Customer Service: First responders, librarians, and transit workers who regularly interact with the public and may need to navigate high-stress situations.

  • Friends, Families, and Neighbors: Everyday individuals who simply want the tools, confidence, and language to support a loved one, parent, child, or friend in need.

Why take Mental Health First Aid training?

  • Builds Concrete Intervention Skills: Participants learn a clear, actionable 5-step framework (ALGEE) to confidently assess, listen, reassure, and encourage appropriate professional help.

  • Reduces Stigma: By demystifying mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use, the training fosters a more compassionate and open environment.

  • Promotes Early Intervention: Recognizing the subtle, early warning signs of a mental health struggle allows you to offer help before a situation escalates into a severe crisis.

  • Saves Lives: Equipping your team or community with crisis-response tools ensures that individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or severe panic attacks receive immediate, non-judgmental support.
